| fr |
dc.description | Denis Le Bihan, physician and physicist, is an internationally renowned researcher in the development and application of highly innovative biomedical imaging methods. He is the inventor of diffusion MRI. Denis Le Bihan founded and directed NeuroSpin. Here, he describes the launch and implementation of Neurospin and the Iseult project.
In the early 2000s, the CEA embarked on a program of exceptional scope to design and build an MRI scanner "explorer of the human brain" of unrivalled power, operating at 11.7 teslas. To house this extraordinary instrument, a dedicated research center, NeuroSpin, was created on the CEA-Saclay campus. The concept behind NeuroSpin is to provide the French and international scientific community with a "grand instrument of biology", offering a platform of exceptional instruments, equipment and expertise to help them to understand how the brain works. NeuroSpin's originality lies in its resolutely interdisciplinary and multi-organizational (CEA, Inserm, INRIA, CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay) organization, aimed at bringing together under one roof players of the highest international level, both methodological and neurobiological. The 11.7 tesla MRI scanner, part of the Iseult project, a Franco-German joint venture bringing together industrial and academic players around ultra-high-field molecular imaging, was delivered to NeuroSpin in 2017 and reached the world record of 11.7 teslas in July 2019. | en |
