Looking back at the setting up of the PET facility dedicated to neuroscience research (CYCERON) and the INSERM in Caen: 1980-2000. The development of the PET platform for neuroscience research (CYCERON) in Caen (Normandy, France) is directly linked to the success of the Service Hospitalier Frédéric-Joliot (CEA, Orsay), where Jean-Claude Baron initiated research in this field in early 1978, initially in cerebrovascular pathology. The CYCERON project was initiated in the early 1980s by the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL), in conjunction with Jean-Michel Derlon, a neurosurgeon at the nearby Caen University Hospital. The project came to fruition in 1983 following a national call for tenders, with support from CEA, Inserm, CNRS and the Region. CYCERON was designed to combine human and animal PET with basic neuroscience research. In 1989, Jean-Claude Baron created an Inserm Unit 320, with focus on PET. The Unit 320 has generated major contributions, notably in the fields of acute stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, and is at the root of Inserm's current strong presence at CYCERON and, more broadly, in Caen.
